Picture Reading
Look carefully at the picture. Observe the children, the house, the trees, the birds and the games that the children are playing.
OUT! OUT!
It was a holiday. Jeet and Babli were playing. They played many games. Both of them skipped the rope. They played hide and seek.
Babli and Jeet decided to play ‘bat and ball’. Jeet got ready to throw the ball.
Jeet threw the ball. Babli hit the ball.
The ball went into Mohit’s garden. But his house was locked. They could not find the ball. So the game stopped.
This time Babli picked the ball. Jeet picked the bat. Babli threw the ball. Jeet hit the ball hard.
The ball opened up and scattered in the air! Babli jumped and caught a piece of rag. She jumped and shouted, “OUT! OUT!”
Babli knew how to make a ball. They got a few rags, paper and wool. Babli also brought a piece of string.
She rolled rags, paper and wool to make a ball. Then she tied the ball with a string. They liked the new ball. The game started again.

Enact the story. You may use some words from the story for dialogues.

Find out about it in detail. The next day speak about it in the class.

Think about things around you that can be used to have fun.
For example, an old bicycle tyre can be used as a wheel and children can run after it with a stick.
Try to use waste material and create something useful.

Picture Reading begins with a picture of children playing together. Children observe the picture and talk about what they see, what the children are doing, how they are having fun and what games they play.
The story “OUT! OUT!” is about Jeet and Babli. It is a holiday and the two children play many games. They skip the rope and play hide and seek.
Later, they decide to play bat and ball. Jeet throws the ball and Babli hits it. The ball goes into Mohit’s garden, but the house is locked. They cannot find the ball, so the game stops.
They start playing again. Babli picks the ball and Jeet picks the bat. Jeet hits the ball hard and the ball opens up. Babli catches a piece of rag and shouts, “OUT! OUT!”
Babli knows how to make a ball. They collect rags, paper and wool. Babli also brings a piece of string. She rolls the materials together and ties them with the string. They like the new ball and start the game again.
The chapter introduces the short ‘e’ sound through words such as egg, engine, elephant, pen, pencil, bell, kettle, hen and well.
Children also learn opposites and practise joining two sentences using and.
The chapter ends with a role-play activity and a discussion about games played by parents and grandparents during their childhood.
“Picture Reading” में बच्चों को एक चित्र देखकर उसके बारे में बोलने और उसमें दिखाई देने वाली चीजों तथा बच्चों की गतिविधियों को पहचानने का अवसर मिलता है।
“OUT! OUT!” कहानी Jeet और Babli की है। छुट्टी के दिन दोनों कई खेल खेलते हैं। वे रस्सी कूदते हैं और छिपन-छिपाई खेलते हैं।
इसके बाद वे bat and ball खेलने का निर्णय लेते हैं। Jeet गेंद फेंकता है और Babli गेंद को मारती है। गेंद Mohit के बगीचे में चली जाती है। उसका घर बंद होने के कारण वे गेंद नहीं ढूँढ़ पाते और खेल रुक जाता है।
बाद में वे फिर खेलना शुरू करते हैं। Jeet गेंद को जोर से मारता है और गेंद खुलकर हवा में बिखर जाती है। Babli कपड़े का एक टुकड़ा पकड़ती है और “OUT! OUT!” चिल्लाती है।
Babli को नई गेंद बनाना आता है। बच्चे कुछ पुराने कपड़े, कागज और ऊन इकट्ठा करते हैं। Babli एक धागा भी लाती है। वह कपड़े, कागज और ऊन को लपेटकर गेंद बनाती है और उसे धागे से बाँध देती है। बच्चों को नई गेंद पसंद आती है और खेल फिर शुरू हो जाता है।
अध्याय में छोटे स्वर की ‘e’ ध्वनि का अभ्यास कराया गया है। इसके लिए egg, engine, elephant, pen, pencil, bell, kettle, hen और well जैसे शब्द दिए गए हैं।
बच्चे विलोम शब्द सीखते हैं और and का प्रयोग करके दो वाक्यों को जोड़ना सीखते हैं।
अंत में बच्चे Babli और Jeet की भूमिका निभाकर कहानी का अभिनय करते हैं तथा अपने माता-पिता या दादा-दादी के बचपन में खेले जाने वाले खेलों के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त करके कक्षा में बताते हैं।
